Background of the study
Religious organizations have increasingly become involved in drug rehabilitation initiatives, particularly in areas where government services may be inadequate. In Aba North Local Government Area, Abia State, these organizations play a pivotal role in providing spiritual, emotional, and practical support to individuals struggling with drug addiction (Eze, 2023). Religious organizations often offer counseling, community reintegration programs, and support groups that address the multifaceted nature of addiction. Their involvement is driven by a commitment to holistic healing, combining faith-based approaches with rehabilitation strategies that promote personal transformation and social reintegration (Okoro, 2024). Despite the potential benefits, challenges such as stigma, limited resources, and the need for professional expertise sometimes hinder the effectiveness of these programs. Recent studies indicate that when adequately supported, religious organizations can significantly reduce relapse rates and improve rehabilitation outcomes (Chima, 2025). This study investigates the role of religious organizations in drug rehabilitation in Aba North, assessing the strengths, challenges, and overall impact of their interventions on individuals and the broader community.
Statement of the problem
Drug addiction remains a pervasive issue in Aba North, and while religious organizations have stepped in to provide rehabilitation services, several challenges limit their effectiveness. Issues such as inadequate funding, lack of professional counseling staff, and social stigma often compromise the impact of these faith-based initiatives (Ike, 2024). Moreover, the absence of structured collaboration with formal healthcare systems further restricts their ability to offer comprehensive rehabilitation services. Consequently, many individuals struggling with addiction do not receive the sustained support required for long-term recovery. This gap calls for a thorough evaluation of the role and effectiveness of religious organizations in drug rehabilitation in Aba North, with the aim of identifying strategies for improvement (Uche, 2023).
